I’m Going to Level With You

This is on the level, mind you.
The reason the content here has been somewhat eclectic and well, face it, boring, is that I’ve been trying to get John’s website done. I’m playing around with code from here, and code from there, and with having several years passed since I took JavaScript, and not having enough knowledge of PHP/MySQL, and not having started the project with any real storyboard or planning, and doing it all on my own between waiting tables at night and taking care of the daily things, I just can’t seem to get a handle on it.

I’m using SSI, i.e., server-side includes, from Will Bontrager’s wonderful website WillMaster Possibilities, and I’ve been in contact with Will about using some of his other code to make this thing run the way I want, and I run through all the tutorials and examples on his pages to continue to learn about setting cookies and displaying content, but the days pass, and I get caught up in little things that remain obstacles for me.

This has been quite an exercise for me in getting something done. I act like I have attention-deficit disorder. I’m hoping to overcome this by having at least this one thing done once and for all. Even a crude, rudimentary, Dreamweaver-produced, slapped-up version would be okay, just so long as it accomplishes most of the mission. If John can sell some of his artwork through his website, then I’ve accomplished something. From there, I can always add bells and whistles, but I have to get the skeleton of it up there first.

It’s funny that I’ve had so many classes in web design and development, but I can’t seem to put it to use. At least not easily. I stand in the way of my own achievement. Whereas I could probably take a long, arduous way around the project and get it at least going, I keep the notion going that there is a really easy way to write code that dynamically generates the pages rather than having to create each of the static pages myself.

Even now, while I have the morning free, here I am writing in my blog rather than working on the code I’m talking about here. I spent a good hour creating the image you see above because I thought it was about time to level with [whomever] about my in·ef·fi·ca·cy

(Late Latin inefficacia, from Latin inefficac-, inefficax inefficacious, from in- + efficac-, efficax efficacious: lack of power to produce a desired effect)

Well, this has been “on the level” straight-talk. I guess I’ll go figure out a JavaScript to display the images on the galleries pages, (I started one once, adapted from code I got from The JavaScript Source but it’s still stumping me to try to apply it to this current project), so keep watching.

It’ll get there eventually.
